Lavished With Love

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1

There are two words that leaped from the page at me, great and lavished. I love finding word origins and definitions, so I looked up the Greek words and root words, which was helpful, then I searched a dictionary, and that is where these few words, fashioned into a sentence of scripture, came alive to me.

I read the definitions of the word great, large in number, large in size, etc., and then I came to this: remarkable in magnitude, degree, or effectiveness. What a perfect description of the Father’s love. Then I moved on to lavished, where I found these: 1. expending or bestowing profusely 2. expended or produced in abundance.

We are children of God not because of anything we have done. We are his children because He has profusely bestowed, in abundance, his love of remarkable magnitude and the totality of sins committed by every person combined since Adam and Eve strode naked through the garden can’t diminish it. To any degree.
